Have you heard about the increasing number of traffic cameras popping up everywhere?

On January 10, 2025, Global News reported that Toronto plans to double the number of speed cameras to 150 in the first quarter of 2025. The City of Hamilton is also adding 10 new red-light cameras and 24 new speed cameras. Windsor currently has 10 red-light cameras operating.

Why would any city or municipality not want to make their roads safer and collect more revenue? Now, let’s talk about camera tickets. Why are they so important to CVOR holders?

The short answer is points! When your driver gets a traffic camera ticket, the jurisdiction doesn’t know who the driver is, but they know who the CVOR owner is. So, the ticket is sent to the CVOR owner. If convicted, points will be added to the CVOR.

My friend Joel from Paradigm Ticket Defence says there’s no defence for camera tickets. They have photographic proof of the violation, so you’re guilty. His advice is to use the delay tactic. Try to delay the conviction for as long as possible.

How many points do you get for a speed camera ticket? It can range from 2 to 5 points, and red-light tickets are 5 points. Joel says he’s seen a speed camera ticket for just 7 km over the limit.

First, educate your drivers about the dangers of speeding. It’s not just about their safety; it’s also about the safety of other road users. If you’re using an ELD, make sure to enforce your company speed policy. Yes, every company needs written and documented policies, and one of them should be a speed policy. Make sure that your policy states that the driver will pay for the cost of the ticket.

For red-light cameras, drivers need to be vigilant and anticipate the change of the green light to amber. They need to pay attention at all times and plan ahead. It’s tough being a driver these days!

Last but not least, make sure your drivers know about the traffic cameras and how they affect your CVOR. You could send out a letter to all of them to make sure they’re on the same page. Or you could just give them this email.

This is a serious matter, and I’ve seen CVOR holders get into a lot of trouble with the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario (MTO) because of traffic camera tickets.

Summary

Traffic camera convictions can hurt your CVOR. Make sure your drivers know how to avoid getting tickets.
